Driving License Category A1
Driving License Category A1 permits you to drive motorized two-wheeled vehicles. It allows you to drive small motorcycles or mopeds with an engine power no greater than 11 kW.
The procedure to obtain this license is slightly different from other categories. Let's take a look at the steps.
Prerequisites
You must be at minimum 16 years old to obtain a driving licence category A1. This licence allows you to drive a light motorcycle, while categories A2 and A are reserved for larger motor vehicles. You must also complete the first-aid course as well as theoretical training based upon the full syllabus. The practical training consists up of a number of driving lessons. The classes last between 3 and 4 hours. The instructors will teach the fundamentals of your motorcycle and the fundamental rules of road. The number of training hours is contingent on your level of ability and progress in learning, however the program requires a minimum of 5 hours of training on federal roads and 4 hours of training on country roads. You'll also have to take part in special riding lessons that are designed to improve the skills you are able to use in difficult situations.
Anyone who wants drive vehicles in category C must have a driver's license that is a category B or higher. A person with a category B licence can continue their training for category A1 by using an easier program. However, they must complete at least ten theoretical lessons and ten driving lessons at driving schools. This is not possible for people who has a category A licence, and that is why the instruction for this category starts at a younger age.
Driving License Category A1 is a fantastic option for teenagers who want to take control of their own vehicle, or for those who have been driving for a period of time but are looking for an alternative way to travel. The restrictions of this kind of license are designed to ensure the safety of everyone. You can get them removed if you can prove that you are able to safely drive larger vehicles.
You must possess a valid medical certification in addition to your driver's license. Depending on the condition of your medical, you may be required to pass an eye exam or other tests. You may also upgrade your license by adding an endorsement. This usually involves passing an additional knowledge test and sometimes a skills test.
Training
In order to obtain a Driving License Category A1, you must pass both the theory and the practical test. In addition to that you must take part in courses in theory and receive training. The training will teach you the basic principles of motorcycling as well as traffic laws that you will be able to apply to your future driving. During the course, you will familiarise yourself with the test materials that are general to all tests, as well as the supplement that outlines the special requirements for the licence category.
After passing the theory and practical test, you are allowed to drive a vehicle that is up to 125cc. To tow trailers that have a maximum authorized mass (MAM) over 750kg, you must possess a Category E licence.
It is important to note that if you are a minor, you will require the written permission of your guardian in order to be able to apply for a Driving License Category A1. In Belgium you are able to drive a moped or a motorcycle with four or three wheels if you possess an A1 category full licence. You can only drive motorcycles in the full category A1 if you have a full A2 or A2 licence. In some countries, you can gain an easier path to higher licence categories by starting with motorbikes that are less powerful. In Germany, for example after two years of experience on Category A1 motorcycles it is enough to pass the practical exam instead of the theory test, to upgrade to category A2. In Austria after five years of education (with the total time of 9x1.5 hours), it is possible to pass the exam for a full A licence.
Theory test
The Driving License Category A1 exam is a two-part exam that includes a theory and the practical portion. It is designed to provide you a basic understanding of the highway code and driving skills. You will need to pass both parts to get your driving license. You can take the test before or after you complete compulsory basic training (CBT).
The theory test portion of the test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that you must answer correctly. It is recommended to prepare thoroughly before taking it and attend a theory course at a recognized driving academy or at a motorcycle training center. You can also practice the test on the internet.

Once you have completed the part of the test that is theoretical and passed the theory portion, you can schedule an appointment to take the practical test. You must present a valid driver's permit and proof of identity to the test center, as well as the vehicle that you will be using for the test. You must wear a helmet and have all safety gear you need.
You will get your driving license within two weeks of when you have passed the practical part of the test. It will be engraved with a gold band over the expiration date, and you will need to show it whenever you are required to do so. You won't be permitted to drive a vehicle other than the one you have on your driving license, and you will need to renew it at least once every two years.

Practical test
The practical test for the Driving License Category A1 exam is divided into two sections. The first part is the examiner's checking and preparing your motorcycle to drive. Then, you'll complete various tasks that are practical on a test course. You will be asked to do an angle start, which entails moving away from behind a vehicle that is parked. You will be required to make several hill starts aswell being asked to turn left and right in the road. You must be able to answer 50 multiple-choice questions to earn your license. You can take the test either in a training center or on your own. You must have completed at least five hours of training on Federal or country roads, 4 hours of training on highways and 3 training hours in dawn or darkness before you are able to take the practical test. These training hours are in addition to the regular practice times you must complete during your motorcycle training.
After passing the theory and practical tests, you'll be granted the Driving License Category A1. This license allows you to drive a motorcycle with a maximum displacement of 125 cc and an engine power/weight ratio of not more than 11 kW per kilogram. This licence allows you to drive a trike with an engine up to 125cc, and the power/weight ratio is not more than 11 kW per kilogram.
Before you can obtain your license, you'll also have to pass a medical test. You must also provide proof of a first aid course and pass a vision test. If you are under 18, you will need the permission of a parent or legal guardian to apply for the driver's license.
